Sad: How Indonesian executed men refused blindfolds and sang “Amazing Grace”

As the clock ticked down to midnight, a group of tearful supporters also sang hymns, embraced and held candles aloft during a vigil at the port in Cilacap, the gateway to the prison island of Nusakambangan. The condemned men reportedly all refused blindfolds and sang hymns, among them “Amazing Grace”, as they went to face the firing squad in a jungle clearing, according to a pastor who was with them. Sentenced-to-deathIndonesia faced a storm of international protest Wednesday for putting seven foreign drug convicts before a firing squad, but Filipinos rejoiced after a compatriot was spared at the last minute. Australia withdrew its ambassador in protest at what it called “cruel and unnecessary” executions, Brazil expressed strong regret and France vowed a diplomatic battle to save a citizen still on death row. Indonesia staunchly defended the executions as a vital front of its “war” on drugs, as testimony emerged of how the condemned men went singing to their deaths. The seven — two from Australia, one from Brazil and four from Africa — were shot along with one Indonesian, despite strident foreign appeals and pleas from family members. Brazil expressed “deep regret” at the execution of its national, who is mentally ill according to his family, and said it was weighing its next move. A Filipina originally set to be executed was given an 11th hour reprieve after a woman who allegedly duped her into ferrying drugs to Indonesia came forward to police in the Philippines.

Hehe! European cars will automatically call emergency services after a crash
The European Union has approved plans to install an emergency call feature
in all cars and light vans from March 31st, 2018. The system, known as
eCall, automatically contacts emergency services in the event of a
crash, as determined by in-car sensors, such as those triggering the
vehicle’s airbags. eCall establishes an audio connection with emergency
operators and automatically transmits basic data including the vehicle's
type, location, and the time of the crash. Passengers and witnesses
will also be able to activate eCall manually by pressing an in-car
button.
"The European Parliament has repeatedly stressed that reducing deaths and the severity of injuries on the roads is its priority," said Czech MEP Olga Sehnalova, the legislation's lead negotiator, in a statement. She added that the system will be "a public service, free of charge for all citizens, irrespective of the type of vehicle or its purchase price." Installing eCall is estimated to cost manufacturers €100 ($109) per car, although drivers wanting to retrofit it could expect to pay more. Sehnalova stressed that eCall will be completely dormant until the moment a crash occurs, telling BBC News that data is only transmitted once a car's airbags are triggered.

Scientists genetically modify human embryos in controversial world first
Scientists in China have genetically modified human embryos in a world
first that has re-ignited the debate over the ethics and safety of
genetic therapies that have the potential to prevent inherited diseases.
The work raises fresh questions over whether restrictions should be placed on a new wave of genetic techniques that are rapidly gaining ground in labs across the world.
The Chinese group used a genome editing procedure called Crispr to modify an aberrant gene that causes beta-thalassaemia, a life-threatening blood disorder, in faulty IVF embryos obtained from local fertility clinics.
The embryos used for their experiments were abnormal and incapable of developing into healthy babies and would have been destroyed by the clinics. They were not implanted into women once the modifications were made.
The team, led by Junjiu Huang at Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou, is the first to publish such work, confirming rumours that have been circulating for months that human embryos had been modifed in China. The work is described in the journal Protein and Cell.

The man had told some persons that he was involved in extra-marital affairs because of an odour that oozes from his wife.
On her return from the native doctor’s place on Friday evening, she immediately applied the charm but unfortunately the man was nowhere to be found. She was said to have mistakenly mixed the charm in her own soup not knowing it was poisonous. She ate it, went to bed and died.

Why I’m not proud to call Buhari my president — Femi Aribisala
Source: Vanguard
Dr. Femi Aribisala, a pastor and Vanguard columnist, in this interaction with Vanguard editors, ventilates his passion for President Goodluck Jonathan and explains his position on the person and politics of the president-elect, Major-General Muhammadu Buhari. Excerpts: Femi Aribisala Femi Aribisala What is your perspective on the just concluded presidential election? This has been the most important political campaign I have witnessed in Nigeria. And the campaign will, to some extent, define the presidency. There were things that needed to be said, emphasized and brought to Buhari’s attention because we needed to remind him that some things would not be acceptable if he becomes the president. Buhari was made to go through a lot of phases. There were some things like the Muslim-Muslim ticket which some of us made so much noise about and they just had to drop it at some point. There were other things that Buhari did which he would not normally do because we made so much noise about his antecedents. Sometimes people simplistically define the process by the result. No! The whole debate is to make him understand that it is not what he had before. It was to make him realize that this is a democratic framework. It was also to sensitize him that certain things would not be acceptable.

Chibok Girls: Sambisa Forest to be liberated May 29 – NSA
On the one year anniversary of the abduction of over 200 Chibok girls, the National Security Adviser (NSA) Col. Sambo Dasuki has assured that the girls will be rescued by the military, adding, that the Sambisa Forest will be liberated before May 29. In a statement by PRNigeria, the NSA said, the movement of the terrorists is being monitored and the military is leaving no stone unturned to “rid the country of the last bastion of terrorists’ infestation”. “Right now, all Boko Haram camps, except Sambisa Forest have been destroyed. The forest would have since been liberated but for the unfavourable weather condition prevailing in the area as all needed reconnaissance activity and necessary deployment of troops have been made for the operation. ” “Every movement of the terrorists is being monitored and every necessary detail is being taken care of to rid the country of the last bastion of terrorists’ infestation”. “Aside the Chibok girls, other Nigerian girls, boys, men and women were abducted by the terrorists and all efforts are being made to rescue them all.” While appealing for a little more time to complete the routing of terrorists, Dasuki recalled that before elections were postponed in February, over 20 local governments were occupied by Book Haram and that most Nigerians were pleasantly surprised that so much was achieved against insurgency within six weeks.
