Lagos Assembly promised to offer N1.25million to anyone who has useful information on the dastard act perpetuated on two women by some men in Ejigbo in 2013.

No leads have been made since the video surfaced on the internet a few months back. Lawmakers have commenced hearing on the case.

Lagos tanker fire burns 15 to death

At least 15 people lost their lives in Lagos on Tuesday night  when  a tanker  laden with 33,000 litres of petrol lost control and rammed into vehicles at Kirikiri, Lagos.
Our correspondents learnt that the tanker spilt all its content, thereby  causing the  fire that burnt  a branch of Sterling Bank at  Berger Suya Bus Stop, one  Automated Teller Machine, 11 vehicles and 60 shops.
Most of the  dead were said to be passengers of a commercial bus  (danfo)  that was  behind the  tanker when it fell and exploded.
An eyewitness claimed that  the  fire caused by the explosion  spread to Suya spots in the area  and burnt parked  vehicles . He added that the body of the tanker driver was glued to  his  seat for  over 40 minutes  before    rescue officials  removed  it.
A commercial bus driver, Murhi Lawal, who spoke to journalists while weeping profusely, said his bus was completely consumed by the fire.
He said, “Around 10pm on Tuesday, my bus developed a fault so I parked it in front of the  Sterling Bank branch. However, the guards on duty said I should move the bus  elsewhere so I decided to park  on the other side of the road so  that I could buy a fan belt.
“As I was attempting to install the belt, I saw the big truck speeding and it rammed into two vehicles before falling on its side and spilling all its content.
“I subsequently heard an explosion and then fire ensued. Before I could save my bus, the fire spread and consumed it.”
Some residents of the area told our correspondent that immediately the accident occurred,  15 people, mostly passengers of a commercial bus, lost their lives.
They said that Capital Oil, Julius Berger and Swift Oil deployed water trucks to put out the flames.
It was learnt that as they fought the fire, it continued to spread to other streets.
A shop owner, Collins Okafor, who claimed to be part of the rescuers, said he counted 13 bodies, excluding those of the tanker driver and his assistant.
He said, “Immediately after the explosion, we came together and started fighting the fire. We tried to save people but about 13 bodies littered the place. The tanker driver and his assistant were also burnt to death.
“One policeman was severely burnt by the fire but we were able to save him. We then proceeded to Sterling Bank and forced the gate open. The security guard had collapsed but we brought him out and he was taken to a nearby hospital.”
One of our correspondents, who entered the premises of  the bank, observed that its heavy duty generator was completely burnt.
The banking hall was also burnt while computers and other equipment were said to have been stolen by hoodlums during the rescue operation.
The President, Berger Business Community, Mr. Okey Udeagba, said about five  injured traders  were  rushed to   hospitals.
Udeagba said the market had been closed due to the fire, adding that  traders alone  lost at least N100m due to the  incident.
He said, “We did not lose any member to the fire  but five people were injured and are recuperating in different hospitals. Most of those killed were passengers and bystanders. However, we lost over N100m   to the fire.
“One of our members, Jones, lost all his goods which were stored in a truck while his shops were also burnt. He is probably the biggest victim financially speaking.”
He urged the state government to indemnify the victims and also avoid demolishing the shops.
When one of our correspondents approached Jones for comment, he said he was too distraught to speak on the issue.

Tukur says he won’t bribe anyone to remain in office

The embattled National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, has said  he will not bribe anyone to remain in office.
He stated on Wednesday in Abuja  that there was no way he would bribe any member of the party’s National Executive Committee, which would meet  next week,  in order to stop the agitation for his removal.
A group, PDP Stakeholders Forum, had claimed in a text message to our correspondent that Tukur was desperate to remain in office and was already planning to bribe some NEC members.
Besides, it alleged that Tukur was also planning to force  some members of NEC and state chairmen  of the PDP to pass a  vote of confidence in  him during the  committee meeting.
The Special Assistant to Tukur on Media, Mr. Oliver Okpala, who spoke with our correspondent on the telephone, said his boss should not be linked with such “falsehood.”
Okpala said, “That allegation is a pure fallacy. It is a fabricated falsehood and engineered by enemies of progress and anti-democratic elements.
“The PDP is a family of like-minds, united under one big umbrella where issues are discussed and resolved amicably as members of one political family.
“Tukur is a decent man whose name should not be associated with such political pranks or gimmicks. He won’t bribe anyone in order to remain in office when in the real sense of it, his office is not threatened.”
He said that members of  the NEC “are above board and should not be linked or associated with such.”
The National Publicity Secretary of the party, Chief Olisa Metuh, also told our correspondent in Abuja on Wednesday, that   the PDP had yet to   take a decision onwhether or not to include the face-off between President Goodluck Jonathan and former President Olusegun Obasanjo  in the  agenda  for  its  NEC meeting.
“I cannot react to it until members of the NWC have their pre-NEC meeting,” Metuh added.
Meanwhile, a   member of the Board of Trustees of the party, Chief Shuaib Oyedokun, has said  many members of the PDP  in the South-West  are not happy with   Obasanjo.
Oyedokun told our correspondent on the telephone on Tuesday that the members believed that   the tactics being used by Obasanjo in handling  PDP  issues   were not favourable to  them.
“We  know in the South-West that a majority of our members do not agree with his (Obasanjo’s)  style to issues,” he said, citing as  an example, a  meeting of members of the PDP which was   called by   the former President   in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
The BoT member   added that a communiqué issued at the end of the meeting conveyed the impression  that the views expressed   were those of the leaders of the PDP in the  South-West.
He said most of the people invited to the meeting were not officials of the party but were handpicked by the former President.
Oyedokun  said, “Recently, he summoned our people to Abeokuta where after the meeting,  they said that the South-West leaders (of the PDP) were there whereas those in attendance were his ex-military men like Olatunji Olurin, Raji  Rasaki and Olagunsoye Oyinlola.
“There was no member of the BoT, NEC   and National Caucus at the meeting. There was no member of the National Assembly or any national officer of the party in attendance, yet they claimed that it was attended by the leaders of the party in  the South-West.
“Majority of the people in the zone do not agree  with his style , his approach to issues are condemnable. I had warned him not to play God.”
Oyedokun  also flayed Obasanjo’s letter to Jonathan, saying  he had so many ways of expressing  himself to  the President .
“There are enough platforms for him  to   use  to express himself. He has tremendous avenues to express himself and his approach should have been corrective,” Oyedokun added.
He said it would have been better for the former President to have claimed credit for the correction later than ridiculing the party before the public.
He however   said the next meeting of the BoT  might  be used to caution individual members of the PDP to watch their  utterances on issues  relating to the running  of the ruling party and the Federal  Government.
The board, according to Oyedokun, remains the conscience of the party, saying it will continue to ensure highest standards of morality in all  PDP activities.

Army destroys 36 tankers and 6 boats in Cross River state over illegal bunkering

The Nigerian Army on Wednesday in Calabar said it destroyed 36 petroleum tankers and six “Cotonou” boats allegedly used for illegal bunkering in Cross River.
The outgoing Commander of 13 Brigade, Nigerian Army, Brig.-Gen. Okwudili Azinta, announced this while presenting a scorecard of his command activities in 2013.
Azinta said that the tankers and boats were destroyed at different locations in the state by members of the Joint Task Force.
According to him, oil theft in Cross River has reduced while most creeks that are being used to refine stolen petroleum products have also been destroyed.
“With the combined efforts of the JTF in Cross River, sea robbery and piracy have also been reduced in the waterways of Cross River and Akwa Ibom.
“Also, there is no militant camp in Cross River; the Efut Esighi militant and shrine camps in Akpabuyo Local Government Area of Cross River have been destroyed by the Nigerian Army.
“All these were made possible by the zero tolerance to illegal oil bunkering in the state,’’ he said.
He said that the command under his leadership had trained 40 officers on intelligence information gathering.
“The army needs appropriate and timely information to strengthen its operational network.
“The Army also needs expertise to collate, gather and make information analysis which can be used to arrest crisis before it escalates.
“The idea of the training was nursed from the fact that the military needed such training on warfare in the present 21st century, ’’ he said.
The commander also said that the brigade, under his command, hosted and won the 82 Division Inter-Brigade Proficiency Combat Competition.

Kano state Government approves N90m for road maintenance

The Kano State Government said on Wednesday that it had approved N90 million for roads maintenance in Kano metropolis.
The State Commissioner for Information, Dr Umar Faruk, said this in Kano when he addressed newsmen on the outcome of the State Executive Council meeting.
Faruk said the council had also approved N5.9 million for the implementation of immunisation plus days in Kano.
He said the council also approved N14.9 million for the building of police outpost, observation tower, wall fence and culvert at Kofar Nasarawa, in Kano metropolis.

Kwankwaso says president Jonathan lacks courage and capacity

Kano State Governor Rabi’u Kwankwaso has said President Goodluck Jonathan is leading Nigeria towards disaster because he lacks courage and the competence to properly manage Nigeria’s affairs.
The governor said this during a meeting with the leadership of the Northern Elders Forum, at the Government House in Kano, on Tuesday night.
This was contained in a statement signed by the Director of Press and Public Affairs, Baba Dantiye, which was made available toThe PUNCH on Wednesday.

He quoted Kwankwaso as saying that despite advice and observations made by respected leaders from within and outside the country on how to put Nigeria on the right track, the Presidency had remained insensitive.
Kwankwaso said, “When we met with the President, as Northern governors, he told us that the former US Secretary of State, Lady Clinton, told him that as President he had to look at the issue of the North very critically.
“She noted that there was an imbalance in terms of patronage, appointments and sharing of resources.
“He assured that he was looking at those comments and that was why he was delaying appointments into boards and so on.
“Since that meeting, we have not seen anything or changes so it is my conclusion that the President lacks the capacity and courage to do the right thing.”
The governor also accused the Jonathan administration of injustice for proposing N2bn for projects in the North-East as against the N111bn proposed for projects in the South-South and the South-East geo-political zones.
He said it was sad that the federal budget was heavily tilted in favour of one section of the country while the other parts were wallowing in illiteracy, underdevelopment and misery.
Kwankwaso noted that “We have had enough crises in this country and it is not right to plant seeds of crisis in the future.
“Look at the North-East that was allocated N2bn in the current budget, N2bn is what Mr. President allocated to non-APC states for supporting him, while N111bn was allocated to the South-East and South-South. This is not close to fairness.”
He explained that his position on current national issues was not premised on religion, ethnicity or sectionalism but stemmed from the desire to see that every Nigerian was treated without discrimination.
The governor charged the National Assembly to oppose injustice especially as was currently being perpetrated by the government.
Earlier, in separate remarks, the chairman of the forum, Alhaji Yusuf Maitama Sule, Danmasanin Kano, and his deputy, Paul Unongo, explained that they were not satisfied with the current political developments in the country, especially as they affected the North.
They explained that the visit to Kwankwaso was to identify with his achievements and sterling leadership qualities as well as to look at several issues that would bring about responsible governance, unity and even development of the country.
When contacted, the Presidency said the statement credited to Kwankwaso only showed that the governor was in need of psychiatric help.
Special Adviser to the President on Political Matters, Mr. Ahmed Gulag, said this in an interview with one of our correspondents.

NBA and CACOL call for Oduah’s removal over Certificate scandal

The Chairman, Ikeja branch of the Nigerian Bar Association, Mr. Onyekachi Ubani, and the Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders, said on Wednesday that Ms Stella Oduah, who is embroiled in a fresh certificate scandal, was no longer fit as the nation’s Minister of Aviation.
CACOL’s Executive Chairman, Mr. Debo Adeniran, said in a telephone interview that the scandal was a proof that Oduah was engrossed in primitive accumulation.

An online news media, Sahara Reportershad reported that claim in Oduah’s profile on the Federal Ministry of Aviation’s website that she obtained a Master’s degree in Business Administration from St. Paul’s College in Lawrenceville, Virginia in 1982, had been found to be false.
Authorities at the Saint Paul’s College, Virginia, United States, have said that they are unable to confirm if indeed Oduah, bagged a first degree in Accounting from the institution.
The President of the institution, Pete Stith, confirmed to one of our correspondents on the telephone on Tuesday that the college had not at any time offered any graduate programme of any kind.
Stith said the school had stopped all academic programmes mid last year, adding that the campus would be shut down in 30 days’ time.
He said the private college founded in 1888 was closing down due to “financial reasons.”
“No, we do not have any graduate programmes at all,” Stith said.
When asked to ascertain if Oduah holds a Bachelor’s degree of the college he said, “I can’t validate anything like that because I just came to close the school down. I’m here to close the campus down; we are closing the school in 30 days. Academic programmes have since stopped.”
Since the news broke that she did not obtain a MBA degree from the college, several attempts had been made to edit her resume and profile on different online platforms.
On Wikipedia for instance, her page was edited 19 times between 1.56pm and 5:05pm on Tuesday. Previous calls for her removal when the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority allegedly bought two bulletproof cars for her at N255m had been ignored by President Goodluck Jonathan.
Ubani said on Wednesday that with the latest scandal there should be no reason to retain the woman as a minister.
He said, “It is becoming very embarrassing. When the news broke out, I was concerned about whether thorough investigation was done before the story was published. But when by the second day the woman started deleting the records online, I knew something was in the offing.
“This was the same woman who broke extant laws in buying bulletproof cars far above the allowed limits, I think something has to be done now. It is even the right time for the woman to speak out.
“If such a person that lies about her certificate can spend additional second in office, it shows how badly we have descended as a nation.”

Amaechi says: You’re a PDP member to Rivers CP

AS the political crisis in Rivers State deepens, Governor Rotimi Amaechi on Wednesday accused the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Joseph Mbu, of being a member of the Peoples Democratic Party.
“The Commissioner of Police is completely not a policeman. He (Mbu) is a known PDP politician who attends meetings with them and carries out illegal actions,” the governor said shortly after signing the 2014 Appropriation Bill into law

He acknowledged the state lawmakers’ determination to carry on with their legislative responsibilities “despite attempts by enemies of the state to forestall their progress.”
Amaechi said, “The initial plan of those led by our so-called ‘Abuja brothers’ and the Commissioner of Police is to stop you (lawmakers) from dealing with legislative functions.
“I hear that one of them is telling people that he has been able to stop the House from sitting, he has been able to stop the judiciary from functioning. The truth of the matter is that none of such things could happen other than the fact that they are using the state apparatus, which is the police.
“But yesterday, you were able to assert that democracy is about people and that when you talk about democracy, it begins with the legislative arm of government for the reason that you represent each unit of our people and you actually go down to the people.”
Members of the Rivers State House of Assembly had on Tuesday sat in the Government House, Port Harcourt, and passed the Appropriation Bill into law.
