You make me hate me so much it hurts.
You declared me righteous,
yet you make a mockery of me with your wanton coquette and incessant
declarations of love and admiration. You taunt me with your
tergiversation and led me on to apostasy. Now I am damned. Damned!
Yet,
your foolish king yearns for your meretricious equivocation, nevermind
they be piffle and nothing more than ditties in your rumbuctious
theatre. Your praise, a fungacious blossom. Splendiferous, yet decayed
to the core.
You soaked in every careless word I whispered, yet
denouce me for my slight transgression. How can you faulty an amorous
tyro? Did I not declare I am but a hobbledehoy? A discombobulated
outsider?
Now, as I have foreboded, the RAT (Righteous, Astute,
Tolerance) Tower has crumbled. I am a foresaken knave, a rapscallion in
your furious conniption.
Yesterday I was your precocious poet...

Game of Boners: Daddy, Daddy, You Bastard, I'm Through
Last night, after calling my dad to wish him a happy Fathers Day, I settled into my couch to watch the season four finale of Game of Thrones and was surprised by a very special holiday episode. The show's characters were also
celebrating their dads. The only difference is that they were
celebrating Father's Day in the tradition of the Seven Kingdoms. And
what do you get the Westerosi dad who has everything? (Answer: an arrow
to the chest while he's taking a shit.)
Before we get started with our recap, a fun fact! Last night's episode is the only one that GoT producers submitted
"for your consideration" to this year's Emmys in the category for Best
Writing. It's a highly unusual move (most shows submit several
episodes), but showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss are so proud of
the season four finale that they didn't feel like they need anything
else. Good move? Bad move? All in the thumbed-out eye pit of the
beholder, I guess.
Titled
"The Children," the season four finale was about just that — both in a
mythical sense and in a more literal one. First, Bran Stark finally
reaches his mysterious destination beyond the wall, but once he and his
band of protectors arrive, they're attacked by by a skeleton army and
it's all very Pirates of the Caribbean/Jason of the Argonauts.
Unfortunately, Jojen Reed dies in the fight, which is...sad? Maybe? I
don't know — at this point in the show, I am very stingy when it comes
to who I get invested in and Jojen was never really merited that much
consideration from me. RIP, li'l buddy. #AllMenMustDie
Around the same time that they lose Love Actually, they're quasi rescued by a little cave lady who looks like the monster from Splice..
She comes from an ancient species known as "the Children" and protects
them from the zombie skeletons with an arsenal of fire balls. She then
leads the group into a cave where Bran will finally meet the three-eyed
raven that he's been seeing in visions since becoming paralyzed. Of
course, it's not an actual raven, but an old wizard who lives in a tree
on a pile of bones. Coooooool.
Also
north of the Wall, Stannis' army comes to the aid of the Night's Watch
right in the middle of Jon Snow's sulk-off/parlay with Mance Rayder
(played by the always great Ciaran Hinds). Congratulations, everybody!
We've finally had a collision of the show's two most boring story lines.
So great that all these austere dullards can finally team up and us to death.
I'm
sure there's lots we could go into (the look Jon shares with Melisandre
through the flames, the way Jon Snow evokes the name of his father Ned
Stark to win over Stannis), buuuuuut we have a better Stark to talk
about and that Stark is Arya, who continues to be the most exciting
character in this whole damn fantasy world.
Throwing fans a major bone, the GoT
writers gave us the Brienne of Tarth/Arya encounter that we've long
been dreaming of. The pair have a wonderful talk about growing up as
women who prefer fighting over more typically girl-ish things, but the
moment of bonding is disrupted by the return of the Hound and his
observation that Brienne is all decked out in Lannister gold. Of course,
WE KNOW that she's as honorable and valiant as they come, but for Arya,
an association with the Lannisters is more than enough to earn
distrust.
During
the exchange, Brienne realizes that she's not just talking to a scrubby
little girl with a love of swordplay, but Arya Stark, the child she's
been charged with bringing to safety, although, as the Hound points out,
"safety" in Westeros is a rather false concept. The argument between
Brienne and the Hound is almost like that of two parents arguing over
what's best for their daughter and, in a twisted way, that's exactly
what's happening. The Hound, for better or worse has become Arya's
father figure, teaching her some invaluable life skills (like how to
kill a man) and actually growing fond of her — or at least as fond as
the Hound can get.
Sadly, this parental argument ends with a nail-biting duel.
RIP: Lucky The Dog
Lucky heaved his final breathe some time on 11 July 2006.
Had not supected a thing because his food bowl would always be empty every day I go back to feed the dogs. Until the good hearted neighbours (god bless them) alerted me yeterday that they saw the dog in the same position for the last two days.My worst fears were confirmed today. His eyes were glazzed and he was gone. To doggie heaven he belongs. Our most long-lived faithful dog

Gunmen massacre dozens in Kenya
At
least 48 people have died after suspected Islamist militants attacked
hotels and a police station in a Kenyan coastal town, officials say.
Witnesses in Mpeketoni said gun battles went on for several hours and reported seeing buildings set on fire.
The town is close to Lamu island, which is a well-known tourist resort.
Kenya has suffered a number of militant
attacks since 2011 when its forces entered neighbouring Somalia to
combat al-Shabab fighters.
The BBC’s Yusuf Dayo in Nairobi said the
attack started at 20:30 local time (17:30 GMT) on Sunday as locals were
watching a football World Cup match on television.
Local residents told the BBC that the attackers had hijacked a van and used it to attack various locations across the town.
Witnesses said gunmen, who had their
faces covered, threw explosives into the local police station before
entering and stealing weapons.

Opinion: #BringBackOurGirls – The Chibok girls should not be victims forever
The
kidnap and enslavement of over 234 school girls from Chibok, an act so
brutal it shocks the imagination and mocks any notion of human decency,
is still in full swing. It has been two months of unfathomable horrors
since they were kidnapped; two months in which we have read and observed
several gory accounts of the hapless girls being shepherded to hidden
swathes of west and central Africa, humiliated in propaganda videos,
forced to convert to Islam, and stripped of their humanity and dignity.
The
#bringbackourgirls social media campaign has moved on; but the problem
has not been solved. The girls have not been rescued, and their plight
seems to have been forgotten. Indeed, the kidnapped girls have every
cause to feel abandoned by the world. If we can forget them in
captivity, what evidence is there to suggest that they would not be
abandoned and forgotten when released from captivity? Where are the
strategies and plans to provide them with the empathy, compassion,
support and sense of security they need to move on with their lives?
As
we have said before, this kind of violence is an affront to the body,
soul, and dignity of every human being. But the issue here is not only
about bringing the girls back physically. We have to bring back their
humanity, their self-esteem, their emotional stability, their belief in a
just and fair world, and their psychological balance.
For
women, the victimization often goes beyond the physical abuse. Women
who are victims of sexual abuse are often held in shame. They lose
social regard and are treated like outcasts. And in most conservative
communities, they are treated like spoiled goods, unfit to marry or have
children. Not only do they face discrimination and stigma in the
foreseeable future, but poverty and lack of opportunities may force many
into prostitution or suicide.
This
is perhaps the nightmarish fate that awaits the girls of Chibok if they
are rescued from the kidnappers. The prospect of a normal life is
improbable. Beyond the physical and psychological trauma, which would
not be easy to recover from, there is also the substantial weight of
negative perception that will follow them back to the communities they
live in. The perception goes beyond the fact that their virtue has been
stolen and points to the likelihood that the girls may not have a
dignified re-entry into society. It then becomes imperative to make
plans on how to re-integrate the girls into society, for what would be a
tough life going forward.

Nigerian Lesbian plans to submit her own gay sex tape to prevent deportation
Aderonke, pictured above with her lesbian partner, Happiness Agboro, has been in a running battle with the UK Home office for a while now. Despite sending them love letters from former girlfriends and supporting statements from friends that she's really gay, the Home Office is not convinced. Now she says she's ready to send them a very personal home video to back up her claims. Continue...
"I was asked to bring my supporting documents for my judicial review for the court to look at. What evidence do we have to compile apart from letters from people? I knew we had a home video of ourselves, so I thought why not just put it in? I cannot afford to go back to my county where I will be tortured, so if I have to prove it with a sexual video, then I have to do it. I feel so bad it’s got to this stage. It’s such a desperate and precarious situation to be in, very dangerous, because anything could happen to those pictures, those videos.”Aderonke told UK's Independent newspaper
New Miss USA Says Women Need to 'Learn to Protect Themselves'
On Sunday, the Miss USA pageant title was awarded to a 24-year-old woman who is a black belt in Tae Kwon Do.
The
title went to Miss Nevada Nia Sanchez who holds a fourth degree black
belt. In her question-and-answer segment, she expressed some ideas
about on campus rape that might make you do a little bit of a double
take.Sanchez, who wore an intricate red gown during the latter part of the three-hour nationally broadcast contest, addressed the issue of sexual assault on college campuses during a question-and-answer session faced by all six finalists. Sanchez said she felt some colleges, fearing a bad reputation, might sweep the problem under the rug, and that "More awareness (of the issue) is very important so that women can learn to protect themselves."She added that as a 4th degree black belt, she learned "you need to be confident and be able to defend yourself ... That's something we need to start to implement for a lot of women."
While
I certainly admire how hard she's worked to obtain her status as a
black belt, college women shouldn't have to "learn to protect
themselves." College men should "learn not to rape." But somehow I doubt
we're going to hear those words come out of the mouth of a national
beauty pageant contestant anytime in the near future.
Jai Paul is working on an album
We couldn't be more excited about this – Jai Paul is coming back. In a new interview with Dazed,
XL's in house producer Rodaidh McDonald has revealed that the
R&B/electronic artist is currently working on new material in the XL
studios.
McDonald says: "I did something with him last week, some vocal production on a new song. We finished it, whether he wants to put it out or not I don’t know. It’s just a very long process for him I guess, he’s been working on (his album) for years. One of the things that I sort of identified was that he might benefit from some help using vocals. But his music sounds so good, he doesn’t need any help, I think he’s perfect."

But his music sounds so good, he doesn’t need any help, I think he’s perfect."
Jai Paul emerged in 2011 with the glorious "BTSTU", a beautifully lazy R&B number layered with a "don't fuck with me"
vocal, a message that would go on to embody the artist's reclusive
persona. Beyoncé and Drake were both impressed enough to sample the song
for their own tracks. A year later he released "Jasmine (Demo)" and the
stage was set for the prodigious artist to drop one of the most
anticipated records of the 2000s. But things didn't quite work out like
that.
His unfinished "debut album" appeared on Bandcamp last year – a fragmented and unmastered collection of 15 tracks which nevertheless showcase the producer's incredible songwriting craft and unique, alien production style. Jai Paul claimed that the uploaded demos were the result of a stolen laptop and the music had been illegally leaked. Others weren't so sure – Crack In The Road did some serious detective work and found that the email address on the Bandcamp linked back to Jai Paul.
Publicity stunt, stolen laptop, a frustrated artist? Who knows. For more from Jai Paul, re-visit his only ever official interview, with Dazed in 2011.

UNILAG students protest hike in registration fee, shut down campus
There's a protest currently going on at the University of Lagos.
Students are protesting UNILAG authority demanding that some students
pay N20,000 for late editing or
registration of Course Forms.
The students first converged at the University's Senate Building where they shouted slogans and sang protest songs, demanding that the school ends this form of exploitation today, while accusing their VC of corruption. They left the senate building and went on a rampage through all the faculties in UNILAG demanding their rights.
The students then blocked entrances to the school, preventing cars from going in and out of the campus.
The students claim they registered late because the school management shut the school portal against registration, only for the school to demand an extra N20,000 from students registering late. The police are currently there to calm things down.

Quebec's National Assembly Passes Right-to-die Law
Quebec’s National Assembly passed a bill on Friday giving terminally ill patients the right to choose to die, news reports said.
The legislation was passed in a free vote by 94 votes to 22.
The

The

FG To Withdraw Politicians’ Soldier Escorts
A security source in the Presidency said the Federal Government would no longer allow soldiers to be in the entourage of governors and members of the National Assembly, among others.
The source said that the “men of the Armed Forces would henceforth serve the purpose for which they were recruited.”
It was stated that it was the position of the top security chiefs in the country that the Army was being saddled unnecessarily with responsibilities that could not be said to be essential.

Direct your anger at Boko Haram, not me – Jonathan tells protesters
President Goodluck Jonathan has urged Nigerians, especially the #BringBackOurGirls campaign protesters, to learn from citizens of other countries who do not blame their governments for terrorist acts.
Jonathan said this yesterday in a speech delivered on his behalf by the Minister of State for Federal Capital Territory, Olajumoke Akinjide, to a group of protesters led by former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwezili.
“When a bomb goes off in Bagdad, Iraq, the people of Iraq do not blame the government, they blame the terrorists. When a bomb goes off in Islamabad, Pakistan, the people of Pakistan do not blame the government, they blame the terrorists. When a bomb goes off in Nigeria, we must all unite to fight the terrorists,” he said.
Jonathan Might Be Nigeria's Last President -Former Gov. Orji Uzor Kalu
Former Governor of Abia state, Dr Orji Uzor Kalu, while speaking with airport correspondents yesterday as he returned from a trip to the UK, said if things are not properly checked politically, President Jonathan might be the last president Nigeria will have.
"When I was travelling precisely on the 26 of April, I left this airport and I spoke to the airport correspondents and I said there was a need to collaborate with international organisations. You see, this issue is not about President Goodluck Jonathan. If we don’t take time and work together as Nigerians, Jonathan might be the last Nigerian President. Jonathan might be the Gorbachev of Nigeria. And that is the truth, so we better wake up. Political class, business class, military, civilians must now stand up to work for our internal security. Internal security is more important than anything we have done and I believe that once we are able to come together Nigeria will be alright. As of now the country is in pains; the country is in problem and some people are taking it very lightly.

Traditional hunters say they are ready to join the military men in search for Chibok girls
Traditional hunters in some Northern states say they are ready to join the military in the search for missing Chibok girls, Associated Press reports.
According to the report, the hunters numbering about 500 and ranging between 18 to 80 years old have been in Borno state for two weeks now waiting for the government and the military to give them the permission to go after the missing girls.
The hunters say their magic charms would prevent any blood being drawn from their body. They also expressed their belief in their herbs wrapped in leather pouches as well as cowrie shells, animal teeth and leather bracelets, including a cocktail of fetish substances which provides them spiritual powers that protects them from being pierced by bullets. One of the spokesman for the hunters said
“We're not saying we are better than the soldiers, but we know the bush better than the soldiers. We are seasoned hunters, the bush is our culture and we have the powers that defy guns and knives; we are real men of courage, we trust in Allah for protection, but we are not afraid of Boko Haram. If government is ready to support us, then we can bring back the girls. But if they are not, they should tell us so that we can disband and return to our homes and family,” said one elderly hunter, Baban Kano.
