A court in Tanzania's northwestern region of Geita on Thursday sentenced four people to death by hanging after they were convicted of killing a woman with albinism.
The prosecution told the court that the victim died after the accused people chopped off both her legs and her right arm on March 11, 2008.
Judge Joacquine Demello said the prosecution had proved beyond reasonable doubt that the accused people had indeed killed the woman with albinism.
The judgment was delivered a few days following reports of a fresh wave of killings of albinos in the east African country associated with witchcraft.
On Monday, Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete expressed shock over the fresh wave of killings of albinos, saying this barbaric cruelty, which has also given Tanzania a bad image, cannot be tolerated.
Kikwete called on the arrest and charging of perpetrators of such brutal killings, saying his government had relentlessly worked round the clock to prevent the crime ever since he assumed the presidency in 2005.
The killings of albinos, which were often motivated by the use of body parts for ritual purposes, have claimed the lives of at least 76 people and 56 others have been injured in Tanzania since 2000. Enditem

Today we are faced with a simple choice, a choice with historical repercussions. Today we are faced with an offer of continuity, a continuity of the last five years; five years of President Goodluck Jonathan and 16 years of his party; the People Democratic Party, until recently, Africa’s supposedly largest party. But we must ask what has the PDP done in the last 16 years to deserve four more years? Perhaps more specifically what has Mr. Jonathan done in the last five years to deserve four more years of our trust and loyalty? First we must appreciate what leadership is, Napoleon Bonaparte said “a leader is a dealer in hope”, Are we more hopeful for the future now, or afraid of it? Are we more unified today behind Jonathan or more separated by him? More succulently, Arnold H. Glasow, the American Humorist said “one of the tests of leadership is the ability to recognize a problem before it becomes an emergency”. There is a leadership emergency today- however we might look at it, that leadership void is an indictment of the sustained incompetency of the PDP years.

A passenger airliner has skidded off the runway at LaGuardia airport in New York City amid snowy conditions.

Emergency officials were called to the airport at about 11:00 local time (16:00 GMT) but no injuries have been reported.
Local media pictures appear to show the plane, a Delta MD-88, has pushed past the airport fence.
Delta Air Lines says passengers left the plane via aircraft slides and were being brought to the terminal by bus.
Heavy snow has been falling in New York since earlier Thursday morning.
The flight had landed at LaGuardia after flying from Atlanta, but then slid off the side of the runway.
The airport has been closed, and is expected to reopen at 19:00 local time, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) says.
Joe Pentangelo, a spokesman with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, said the plane was apparently leaking fuel.

Housewife jailed for pouring hot water on husband in Abuja

A 45 year old housewife, Owolabi Laide was sentenced to three months imprisonment on Thursday 3/5/2015 by An FCT Area Court in Lugbe for pouring hot water on her husband.

According to Vanguard, The convict who lives at Goesse Village, Airport Road Abuja, was sentenced on a one-count charge of “causing hurt on provocation.’’ The Judge, Mr Gambo Garba, however, gave Laide an option of N5, 000 fine. According to the judge, the court is being lenient because of her six- month old baby. Garba said the punishment would have been more severe if the convict had not pleaded guilty and saved the court the pains of protracted prosecution. He told the convict to desist from committing crime. The convict had pleaded guilty and begged the court to tamper justice with mercy. “ Please sir, don’t send me to jail because of my six months old baby. “ I am so sorry for what I did; it was the devil that lured me into this act. I will not do it again. “I just discovered that my husband has other five wives without my consent.

A racist thug who pushed a policewoman onto railway lines as she tried to arrest him as been jailed for 30 months.

Kevin Phythian struggled with the officer as she attempted to detain him for running across live tracks onto a platform at Manchester Oxford Road station on 15 February.
The 32-year-old suddenly pushed her backwards, sending her flying backwards on to the tracks.
She was knocked unconscious and suffered a broken finger in the assault.
A quick-thinking station supervisor, who was also assaulted by Phythian, used an emergency phone to stop all trains on the line.

The Emir of Gusau in Zamfara state, Alhaji Kabir Danbaba has passed away. According to the Zamfara state Commissioner for Information, Ibrahim Magaji, Alhaji Danbaba died today at a private hospital in Abuja after a protracted illness.

He is survived by many wives, 37 children & many grandchildren. May his soul rest in peace, amen.

Boko Haram Killed 68 People Near Dambua Town, Borno

At least 68 people have been killed in a fresh attack in the Borno village of Dambua by Boko Haram militants, a civilian JTF Leader said.

Boko Haram stormed Njaba village in Dambua Local Government area of Borno state on Monday, the militants killed 68 men, with the ages ranging from children to elderly. Boko Haram then set the entire village on fire, a fleeing villager told SaharaReporters. At the time of reporting it seems only men were targeted during this attack.
A fleeing woman told SaharaReporters "more than 60 people have been killed by the insurgents, they killed all our husbands and young boys," adding that all their dead bodies were left unattended.
"They came to our village at about 5:30am, during early Morning Prayer, so we started hearing heavy gunfire [then] there was pandemonium everywhere and gunshots and there was confusions everywhere. I ran into bush since then I never seen my husband and three children. [I] came back to our village in the afternoon dead bodies was scattered everywhere,” Fatima Abakar told SaharaReporters by phone.

The APC presidential candidate, General Muhammadu Bahari has described former President Olusegun Obasanjo as a courageous patriot who tells the truth to power when he is convinced leaders are going wrong.
In a statement he issued on the occasion of Obasanjos’s birthday, General Buhari said the former president is a nationalist whose commitment to democracy and good governance are worthy of recognition and praise.
The APC presidential candidate acknowledged that, although Obasanjo is widely perceived as controversial, he said such perception should not overshadow his patriotism and remarkable courage to speak up when things go wrong in the county.

U.S. ambassador to South Korea Mark Lippert was attacked in Seoul, possibly by more than one person, according to U.S. government sources in the U.S. and South Korea.

Lippert was injured by a small razor blade, according to Seoul police. His injuries are not life threatening, according to Marie Harf, a State Department spokeswoman.

According to South Korea's YTN news channel, Lippert was about to deliver a speech at a breakfast being held at Sejong Hall in Seoul. The report says nothing specific about the attack, only that yelling was heard and then the bloodied ambassador was taken to hospital.

The YTN report also says a suspect identified by last name "Kim" was detained. The report says Ambassador Lippert was injured around his face and on his arm.

An official with the South Korean Police Agency said Lippert was attacked by a small razor blade. He received injuries on his right cheek and hand. He is being treated.

The suspect -- believed to be in his 50s -- is detained and currently under investigation.

The incident happened at 5.42 p.m. ET.

Lippert has been a confidant of President Barack Obama ever since he arrived in the Senate in 2005. Lippert worked with Obama on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and traveled the world with the senator as he garnered the foreign policy experience that helped pave the way for his presidential campaign.

Scientists have unearthed the jawbone of what they claim is one of the very first humans.

The 2.8 million-year-old specimen is 400,000 years older than researchers thought that our kind first emerged.
The discovery in Ethiopia suggests climate change spurred the transition from tree dweller to upright walker.
The head of the research team told BBC News that the find gives the first insight into "the most important transitions in human evolution".

President Idriss Deby of Chad said Wednesday he knew the hideout of Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau, and vowed that the leader of the insurgent group will be killed if he fails to surrender.
“It is in Abubakar Shekau’s interest to surrender, we know where he is. If he refuses to give himself up, he will suffer the same fate as his comrades,” Mr. Deby said at a press conference with his visiting Niger counterpart, news agency AFP reported.
Mr. Deby vowed to “wipe out” Boko Haram, responsible for more than 15,000 deaths.
Mr. Shekau has remained in hiding since his group started out in 2009 targeting civilians, security officials, villages, schools, markets and places of worship. He however appears infrequently in propaganda videos released by the sect.
The Nigerian military has repeatedly, but incorrectly, claimed to have killed Mr. Shekau, who is also wanted by the United States government.
Lately, increased military operations by Nigeria, Chad, Cameroun and Niger in recent weeks have apparently pushed back Boko Haram, with Nigerian forces recovering several towns held by the group.

EFCC Arraigns Eleven Suspected Oil Thieves

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on March 4, 2015 arraigned Eleven suspected oil thieves: Ephraim Akpan, Agadagba Ochuko, Clement Tommy, Oyayefa Abonne, Bousou Kereotu, Dereye Harry, Lucky Abonne, Dapo Obdare, Friday Ibude, Ebi Ekokeme, Vincent Elayegha, and the vessel, MT Petroitti before Justice M.S Abubakar of the Federal High Court Warri, Delta State on a 2- count charge bordering on conspiracy and illegal dealing in petroleum product.
The accused persons and their vessel were arrested on May 23, 2014 by officers of the Nigerian Navy following a tip off around Ofoma oil terminal in Delta State, with about 272MT of substance suspected to be crude oil and handed over to the EFCC for further investigation and prosecution.
They pleaded not guilty.

As major petroleum marketers deploy 495 truckloads of premium motor spirit (PMS) or petrol, popularly known as fuel, with a minimum capacity of 33,000 litres to Lagos and Abuja, the federal government has re-assured Nigerians that the scarcity of the commodity witnessed across the country currently will ease off by this weekend.

All the stakeholders, including Major Oil Marketers Association of Nigeria (MOMAN), Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Depot and Petroleum Products Marketing Association of Nigeria (DAPPMAN), Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency ( PPPRA), Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation ( NNPC) and Pipelines Products Marketing Company (PPMC), among others assured yesterday that the scarcity of the product will end in a few days.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Wednesday exhibited his soccer skills as he led the OBJ Team in a soccer duel with the Ogun State Executive Team.
The match which was designed as part of his 78th birthday programme, took place at Moshood Abiola Stadium, Abeokuta, with Governor Ibikunle Amosun, leading the state team.
Mr. Obasanjo scored two goals for his team, defeating the Amosun team which recorded one goal at the full time of the match.

The Governor was awarded the Most Valuable Player of the match, while Mr. Obasanjo won the Golden boot award and Akin Mabogunje received award of Best Goalkeeper of the encounter.
Speaking to journalists after the match, Mr. Obasanjo who was the captain of the team expressed satisfaction over the game. He said sports is a necessary exercise for both the old and the young.
“I am satisfied and fulfilled, even at my age I cherish sport, because it is relevant to health and we should all endeavour to engage in sporting activities”.

New York City public schools have added two Muslim holidays to the school calendar, Mayor Bill de Blasio and Schools Chancellor Carmen Farina announced Wednesday. Schools will now close for Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, making New York City the largest school district in the nation to recognize the two holidays on the official school calendar.
“We are committed to having a school calendar that reflects and honors the extraordinary diversity of our students,” said Farina.
De Blasio said the change means that Muslim families won’t be forced to choose between observing the holidays and sending their kids to school.
The announcement was made at PS/IS 30 in Brooklyn, where officials said 36 percent of students were absent the last time Eid al-Adha fell on a school day.

A Turkish Airlines jet landing in dense fog in the Nepalese capital Wednesday skidded off a slippery runway but there were no serious injuries, officials said.
Officials at Kathmandu's Tribhuwan International Airport said the plane with 238 people on board was coming from Istanbul when the accident happened.
They say passengers had bumps and bruises but no serious injuries.
The runway was slippery after two days of rain and there was dense fog at the time. The plane was stuck in the grass and there was some damage to the front of the Airbus 330.
The plane on a seven-hour flight circled for half hour over Nepal before it made a second attempt to land.
The only international airport in Nepal remained closed Wednesday morning after the accident.

FCT Minister’s nephew kidnaps brother, demands N10m

The Police in Bauchi State have arrested one Salisu Salmanu, who claimed to be a nephew of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Senator Bala Mohammed, for kidnapping.

The police said Salmanu connived with his friends to kidnap his three-year-old younger brother at Kofar Idi in Bauchi and demanded a ransom of N10m from his father.

Salmanu, 19, was arrested with three of his friends, namely; Imrana Abdullahi, 17, Abdullahi Mohammed, 19, and Umar Musa, 19, all residents of the Kofar Idi area of the Bauchi metropolis.

The spokesman for the Bauchi State Police Command, DSP Haruna Mohammed, said the police detectives attached to Township division on February 28, 2015, at about 12pm, arrested the four suspects, who connived with four others still at large to commit the crime.

He said, “The suspects conspired with four others, now at large, to kidnap one Abdulkadir Salmanu, male and three years old of Kofar Idi, took him to Gwallameji and demanded 10m ransom from the parents.

Removing Jega will lead to violence, Reps warn FG

The House of Representatives on Tuesday warned the Federal Government against tampering with the existing “arrangements” for the March 28 elections, particularly the removal of the Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega.

The House noted that changing the election plans either by further extending the dates or removing Jega would only lead to a magnitude of violence, worse than what was witnessed after the 2011 polls.

In a resolution in Abuja, the House drew the attention of the political class, the Federal Government, state governments and security agencies to warnings of unavoidable violence already issued by eminent Nigerians and groups, both on the international and local scenes.

The resolution was taken following a motion moved by the Chairman, House Committee on Justice, Ali Ahmad.

Bill Gates tops Forbes’ list of billionaires

Microsoft co-founder, Bill Gates, on Monday topped Forbes magazine’s list of richest people in the world, a report said.
Forbes said in the report that Mr. Gates has an estimated fortune of 79.2 billion dollars.
It added that “that is 3.2 billion dollars more than last year’s.”
It noted that his net worth grew in spite of a gift in November of 1.5 billion dollars of shares in Microsoft to his charity, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

The Food and Drug Administration is warning doctors against over-prescribing testosterone-boosting drugs for men, saying the popular treatments have not been established as safe or effective for common age-related issues like low libido and fatigue.

Testosterone supplements may increase the risk of heart attack, stroke and other heart problems, FDA said. Drugmakers must add information about that potential risk to their prescribing labels and conduct a long-term study to further examine the issue, the FDA said.

The agency says drugmakers must clearly state in their labeling and promotions that the drugs, currently taken by millions of U.S. men to the tune of $2 billion, are only approved to treat low testosterone levels caused by disease or injury, not normal aging.

President Goodluck Jonathan said Tuesday in Abuja that utmost care was being taken by the Federal Government to avoid collateral damage to the lives and properties of civilians as the military intensifies its ongoing offensive against Boko Haram.
Speaking at an audience with the new South Korean Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Noh Kyu-Duk, President Jonathan said that everything possible was also being done by the military to avoid human rights violations in the theatre of operations in the North Eastern states.

Police arrest 50 protesting JAMB candidates in Benue

The Benue Police Command on Monday arrested 50 candidates of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) for violent protests and stoning of security officials.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Hyacinth Dagala, said the police intervened to prevent breakdown of law and order when the candidates started throwing stones at JAMB officials.
According to him, the stones injured one of the security guards and a police officer attached to the office.

Eight people reported dead in murder, suicide in Missouri

Eight people were found dead overnight in an apparent mass murder and suicide in rural southern Missouri, the Missouri State Highway Patrol said on Friday.
Seven people were thought to be victims of one man who died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to a statement by the highway patrol. One elderly woman was found dead of what appeared to be natural causes during an investigation.
The events unfolded around 10 p.m. Thursday night when the Texas County Sheriff’s Department responded to a call about a disturbance involving a weapon at a residence in Tyrone. A girl called authorities, saying she had fled to a neighbor's house after hearing gunshots in her home.

The Rivers State Police Command Friday rescued a four-year-old-girl from the hands of her abductors barely 30 minutes after her abduction. The little girl who was taken away from her mother, at Ikoku Junction along Ikwerre road at Mile 2, regained her freedom by the swift intervention of the police. An eye witness told Vanguard that the kidnappers double-crossed the mother of the girl in her car along the Ikwerre road and made away with her handbag, her child and other valuables. The Commissioner of Police Rivers state Police command, Dan Bature who confirmed the incident told the press that the little girl has been rescued from her abductors just about 30 minutes after her abduction. He said the police following recent cases of kidnapping in the state have intensified actions to curb the menace.

Ebonyi Assembly begins impeachment proceedings against Gov. Elechi

The Ebonyi State House of Assembly has agreed to serve an impeachment notice on Governor Martin Elechi, after accusing the governor of corruption and gross misconduct.
A motion for the notice to be served on the governor was approved after the acting Majority Leader of the House, Francis Nwifruru, on Friday, read details accusing Mr. Elechi of undermining the integrity of the House and committing fraudulent acts.
The Ebonyi Assembly had last Wednesday, February 18, set up a panel to investigate allegations of financial misappropriation against the governor and some of his aides.
The assembly took the decision following petitions it received from groups in the state, including Ebonyi Integrity Group.

President Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday visited Baga town in Borno State, and Mubi in Adamawa.

During his visit, he addressed officers and men of the Nigerian army in both towns, which were recently recaptured from Boko Haram,

He applauded the army for their bravery and patriotism they have shown in the fight against Boko Haram.

Buhari’s full speech at Chatham House

Permit me to start by thanking Chatham House for the invitation to talk about this important topic at this crucial time. When speaking about Nigeria overseas, I normally prefer to be my country’s public relations and marketing officer, extolling her virtues and hoping to attract investments and tourists. But as we all know, Nigeria is now battling with many challenges, and if I refer to them, I do so only to impress on our friends in the United Kingdom that we are quite aware of our shortcomings and are doing our best to address them.
The 2015 general election in Nigeria is generating a lot of interests within and outside the country. This is understandable. Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country and largest economy, is at a defining moment, a moment that has great implications beyond the democratic project and beyond the borders of my dear country.
So let me say upfront that the global interest in Nigeria’s landmark election is not misplaced at all and indeed should be commended; for this is an election that has serious import for the world. I urge the international community to continue to focus on Nigeria at this very critical moment. Given increasing global linkages, it is in our collective interests that the postponed elections should hold on the rescheduled dates; that they should be free and fair; that their outcomes should be respected by all parties; and that any form of extension, under whichever guise, is unconstitutional and will not be tolerated.

The presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, has stated that he is fit, healthy and well to lead Nigeria if elected on March 28. Buhari made the disclosure during his appearance at the Chatham House, London. The former Head of State who stood for more than one hour to address and answer questions, also said that he takes full responsibility for whatever happened under his watch as a military dictator in Nigeria between 1983 to 1985. Meet the First Black US Senator - Hiram Revels

Hiram Rhodes Revels, (September 27, 1827– January 16, 1901) was a minister in the African Methodist Episcopal Church (AME), a Republican politician, and college administrator. Born free in North Carolina, he later lived and worked in Ohio, where he voted before the Civil War.

He was elected as the first African American to serve in the United States Senate, and in the U.S. Congress overall. He represented Mississippi in the Senate in 1870 and 1871 during the Reconstruction era.
During the American Civil War, Revels had helped organize two regiments of the United States Colored Troops and served as a chaplain. After serving in the Senate, Revels was appointed as the first president of Alcorn Agricultural and Mechanical College (now Alcorn State University), 1871-1873 and 1876 to 1882. Later he served again as a minister.
