What next after WLAN, Bluetooth? Germany developing new wireless standard

With rapid changes in technology, existing radio technologies are reaching their limits.
Scientists from the Institute of Industrial Information Technology (inIT) of East Westphalia-Lippe (OWL) University, dissatisfied with existing solutions, are taking a big step into the future by developing entirely new wireless standards.
The "factory of the future" requires wireless technologies that can do more, faster, more efficiently while being safer, according to researchers at the OWL University.
"In order to accomplish these demands, real innovations are necessary in the networking of industrial plants," said Juergen Jasperneite, managing director of inIT.

At inIT, new technologies and methods are being developed through the connection of the digital and automated worlds.
Wired installations mean restrictions in terms of flexibility, but none of the existing wireless radio solutions, such as WiFi, Bluetooth or ZigBee, can achieve the necessary transmission rates and reaction times, researchers said.
An inIT project named HiFlecs, which stands for "high-performance, secure wireless technologies and their system integration in future industrial closed-loop automation techniques," comes in to replace previously used radio technologies.
Their goal is to increase the efficiency and flexibility of the control and regulation processes. Meier said: "We are developing a new industrial radio system that is far beyond the state-of-the-art technology and provides new functionality and features to radio communications."
The German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) is funding the project to the tune of 544,000 euros (593,574 U.S. dollars).

Taylor Swift buys a Porn website Domain Name?

Taylor Swift has reportedly bought the domain names taylorswift.porn and taylorswift.adult ahead of them going on sale to the public on 1 June.
Since 2011, the not-for-profit Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Number has been expanding the number of generic domains (or gTLDs) such as .com and .net.
There were originally 22 but there are now more than 547, with new ones released every month.
From June, a number of controversial web addresses will be made available, but a select group of individuals and companies with trade marks have been given the opportunity to buy them early.
CNN Money reports that the Shake It Off singer has snapped up the adult addresses for herself to avoid anyone else misusing them in her name.
Microsoft has reportedly also bought up Office.porn and Office.adult.
Another web suffix being released is .sucks.
In January, Swift trademarked catchy phrases from her hit songs such as "This sick beat" and "Party like it's 1989" to stop people from using them to sell unofficial merchandise.

Opposition supporters inside the courtroom shouted in protest after the verdict was read. "I no longer want to be Senegalese," shouted one woman. "This verdict is shameful."

Nigerians should be wary of PDP’s religious ploy- Osinbajo counsels

Source: Nigerian Tribune
Vice presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Professor Yemi Osinbajo, has warned Nigerians to be wary of plan to use religion to hoodwink them into voting for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), saying let no one think he can protect corruption in the guise of protecting his religion.
Professor Osinbajo, who gave the warning in Jos, Plateau State, during an interactive session with the state Christian leaders, said let no one pretend that he is championing a Christian course by supporting PDP-led government.
He debunked the notion that the presidential candidate of APC is a fanatic, whose sole aim of seeking for the governance of the country is to Islamise it and spread Sharia to all the nook and crannies of Nigeria, adding that the statement was just a ploy by the PDP-led government and their cronies to tarnish his image.

It is wrong for the President to be summoning Jega at will - APC

Press statement from the APC below...

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has said the President's decision to summon INEC Chairman Attahiru Jega to a meeting that was not attended by other political parties in Abuja on Tuesday is part of ongoing moves to compromise the integrity of the electoral commission, which is expected to be fair and neutral.
In a statement issued in Abuja on Wednesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said it is wrong for the President, who himself is a candidate in the forthcoming elections, to be summoning the electoral umpire at will, especially when such meetings are populated by his appointees.
''Without the representatives of other political parties attending such meetings, irrespective of whether or not it is aimed at briefing security chiefs on the preparations for the polls, the ruling PDP and its presidential candidate are seeking to gain undue advantage over others ahead of the elections.

How to Get Your Spouse to Exercise (read)

Spouses influence each other’s exercise habits, for better and worse, more than is often recognized, according to an interesting new study of the workout habits of middle-aged couples. The study found that changes in one spouse’s routine tend to be echoed in the other’s, highlighting the extent to which our exercise behavior is shaped not just by our personal intentions but by the people around us as well.
In studying why people opt to exercise or not, scientists often and understandably focus on individual psychology and situations. But increasingly, exercise scientists are also looking into broader factors that can have a bearing, including our social relationships and whether being single, married, childless or employed is likely to affect exercise behavior.
The results of past studies on this subject have been alternately predictable and startling. Single men and women, for instance, generally exercise far more than do married people, although divorce can change that. Men typically exercise more after a marriage ends; women in that situation frequently exercise less. Meanwhile, employed men, even those with desk jobs, usually exercise more than men who are unemplyed.

United flight turns around after passenger runs up aisle Screaming 'jihad jihad'

A United Airlines flight made a U-turn in the sky after a passenger ran toward the cockpit screaming "jihad, jihad," according to a government official with direct knowledge of the incident.  There is nothing, so far, in the man's background to suggest he has a connection to terrorists, the government source said. His mental state at the time is unknown, and no weapons were found after he was subdued.  Still, his words are alarming, coming at a time when the United States and its allies have been targeted by Islamist extremist groups like ISIS, and with memories of the September 11, 2001, hijackings of four U.S. commercial airliners still etched in many Americans' minds.  They were spoken aboard United Flight 1074, shortly after it took off around 10:15 p.m. Monday from Dulles International Airport in suburban Washington.  The Boeing 737 jet was supposed to take its 33 passengers and six crew members to Denver, but was turned back because the unnamed passenger "failed to comply with crew instructions," United Airlines spokesman Luke Punzenberger said.

Mr. Amadi said following the approval of the multi-year tariff order, MYTO 2.1 in January 1, 2015, the Commission had received several complaints and petitions against the decision, which resulted in astronomical increases in tariff across the different consumer categories.
He noted particularly the petition by industrial and commercial consumers under the auspices of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, which demanded a drastic reduction of their tariffs.
The two categories of consumers had cited the negative impact of their increased tariffs, which they said were threatening their businesses, leading to massive job losses.

Bama city recaptured from Boko Haram- Nigeria military

Nigerian government forces recaptured the northeastern city of Bama from Islamist Boko Haram insurgents, the army said on Monday, a significant victory for the government just two weeks before a national election.
Boko Haram had held Bama, situated in Borno state where their six-year-old insurgency to establish a medieval-style Islamic caliphate has been centred, since September last year. Their campaign expanded over the past few months with cross-border incursions into Niger, Chad and Cameroon.
But counter-strikes launched by the armed forces of Chad and Niger over the frontier into Nigerian territory, particularly around Lake Chad, as well as the engagement of hundreds of mercenaries may have begun to turn the tides of the conflict.

Virginia school suspends an 11-year-old for one year over a leaf which was mistaken for marijuana

Earlier this school year, a sixth-grader in the gifted-and-talented program at Bedford Middle School in Bedford, Virginia was suspended for one year after an assistant principal found something that looked like a marijuana leaf in his backpack.
The student, the 11-year-old son of two school teachers, had to enroll in the district's alternative education program and be homeschooled. He was evaluated by a psychiatrist for substance abuse problems, and charged with marijuana possession in juvenile court. In the months since September, he's become withdrawn, depressed, and he suffers from panic attacks. He is worried his life is over, according to his mother, and that he will never get into college.
The only problem? The "leaf" found in the student's backpack wasn't what authorities thought it was -- it tested negative for marijuana three separate times.

An Ethiopian Airlines pilot was convicted in absentia on Tuesday of hijacking his own plane and flying it to Geneva, 13 months after he surrendered to police and sought asylum there.
The high court in Addis Ababa said it would sentence Hailemedhin Abera Tegegn on Friday -- if he ever returns to his home country he could face up to 20 years in jail.
Hailemedhin, second-in-command on the Feb. 17, 2014 flight to Rome, took control of the aircraft when the main pilot left the cockpit for a toilet break, Swiss police said.

With the jet on the tarmac, an unarmed Hailemedhin scrambled down an emergency rope and surrendered to police without harming the 193 passengers on board the Boeing aircraft, 139 of them Italians, 11 Americans and four French.

Priests lead rally against Indian nun’s gang-rape

Thousands are expected to join a rally led by priests in India’s Kolkata in support of a 71-year-old nun who was gang-raped at her convent school, the city’s archbishop has said.
The rape by a gang of robbers late on Friday is the latest in a series of high-profile sexual assaults in India that have intensified outrage over high levels of violence against women, leading to Monday’s scheduled protests.
“We expect three to four thousand people to attend the rally. In fact we have asked all the city parishes to join the rally,” Archbishop of Kolkata Thomas D’Souza told AFP news agency.
“We also expect common people to participate and express their solidarity to the victim.”
D’Souza said hymns and prayers for the nun would be encouraged at the rally, which would culminate in a candlelit vigil on Monday evening.

New research brings drug to treat HIV closer to reality

Scientists are one step closer to creating a drug that could prevent HIV infection and even remove all the dormant copies of the deadly virus from patients with the more advanced disease.
Researchers at Salk Institute for Biological Studies in the US said such a drug could become a reality by customising a powerful defense system used by many bacteria and training this scissor-like machinery to recognise the HIV virus.
When a copy of the HIV virus sneaks into a human cell, it co-opts the cell's own molecular machinery to make copies of the virus's genetic material and then buries these copies in the cell's own genes.
