Story: My old ways (A must read)

I am Ify, a girl like you who also has fears, beliefs, reservations and just your regular typical Nigerian girl. This past few weeks has been one hell of a game for me. I have really been unsettled and I thought I share this story with you. When Cynthia (the lady killed in the hotel room in Festac) surfaced the internet and various new media, I was scared and it brought back a whole lot of memories to me and also served as an eye opener. Many people castigated and criticized Cynthia (may her gentle soul rest in peace). But my point is, it could be any body, anybody at all. We have met people through various social media, some have ended up well, and some have not with painful memories. To cut the long story short, let me kindly share with you my encounter with social media especially the very popular Blackberry Messenger BBM. I am a graduate and currently serving in Kaduna, I could have runced it, but I needed somewhere to clear my head and forget about my ugly encounter.
Here is my story, I happened to have a married man as contact on my BBM. He had been asking me out for over six months and I refused to date him. As time went on, he invited me clubbing when his wife was outside the country. I went with him all night.

Fayose’s popularity based on sentiments –Falana

Mr. Femi Falana, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, speaks with OLUSOLA FABIYI on the political development in Ekiti State and the expectations of Nigerians from the President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari
Ekiti has been in the news for the past few months. How do you feel with the type of news coming from your state?

I feel embarrassed but I am not surprised. When you interviewed me last year, I confirmed that Mr. Ayo Fayose won the governorship election but I was quick to point out that the Ekiti people were fully back in Egypt. I knew that the Ekiti people would pay dearly for the choice they had made. In particular, I predicted that many people would go on exile. It is common knowledge that 19 elected legislators elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress had to flee the state last year. Many others have gone on self exile. A diplomat informed me last week that all development agencies had pulled out of the state. People are reluctant to visit the place as all roads leading to the state may be blocked at any time without any notice. The courts have been sealed off since last December on account of a strike by judiciary staff. No investor goes to a state where the rule of law is in abeyance. However, I feel sad and worried when I am reminded that I had analysed the situation correctly. I had thought that I would be proved wrong. With respect to the people, I sincerely believe that they deserve respect for the choice that they have made. That is what liberal democracy is all about.

Photos: Live goat swallowed by 10ft python

The python would be around 9-10 feet long and it looked young.
'I was there for more than an hour and later I heard from the villagers that the python finished the goat in around four hours.'
It remained unclear quite how the giant snake nabbed the goat in the first place, but eyewitnesses said the python continued devouring its prey despite the crowd's presence.
A villager said: 'It did not seem to be bothered. The python left for the forest after he finished swallowing the goat.
'It slowly crawled into the grassy bushes nearby.'
The incident is believed to be the first of its kind in the village but has led to concerns among snake experts.
They say that excessive deforestation in the Jalpaiguri Forest Reserve is leading to a grave imbalance in local ecological systems.
Vidyut Sarkar, the district forest officer, said: 'It is a rare incident. This is the first time that I seen something like this.
'It would still have been acceptable had this happened inside the forest range or had the python caught a deer or something. But a python strike inside the village is an alarming sign.
'If the python caught a goat, it could very easily kill a man or a child.'

Is it not your government that this person benefited from?

The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Caretaker Committee in a congratulatory visit to the President-elect, General Muhammadu Buhari yesterday, revealed that President Jonathan scammed the Igbo nation about awarding contract for the construction of Second Niger bridge and major federal roads in the South East. While meeting with Buhari at the Defence house in Abuja, the committee maintained that Enugu-Awka-Onitsha Expressway and Enugu-Umuahia-Aba Expressway are yet to benefit from any development. It further alleged that no financial commitment was made by the Goodluck Jonathan-led administration towards the construction of the Second Niger Bridge, claiming that those were campaign messages cooked to win over Ndigbo. The leader of the delegation, Chief Ralph Obioha, who spoke on behalf of the Committee, told Buhari that the South-east would fully support the incoming government to succeed, urging him to reconstruct Nigeria. He said: “This is a delegation of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Caretaker Committee, who proudly took side with you, convinced that what Nigeria needs today is the leadership that you will provide to rebuild our battered and pulverised nation. “The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Caretaker Committee is fully aware of the difficult and daunting work that has befallen on your shoulders. And we are here to offer our commitment that Ndigbo will stand shoulder to shoulder with you on this mission to reconstruct our nation. “We are also aware that our cry of marginalization is not unique to our region, but ours stands out as an SOS case as a region criminally neglected and abandoned by the outgoing administration. “During your campaign tours, you saw things for yourself and needless reminding Your Excellency that South-east is an emergency case. You drove through the badly neglected and impassable Enugu-Awka-Onitsha Expressway and the Enugu-Umuahia-Aba Expressway, needless to mention the Oba-Okigwe Highway. “Contrary to the election claims by the outgoing administration, no appreciable work is going on these roads, information has shown that no financial arrangement has been firmed up for the Second Nigeria Bridge. The Oputa Panel report has been gathering dust and Ndigbo have pleaded for the revisitation of the so-called abandoned property in Nigeria and its collateral reparation demand. “One common denominator is that unknown to a vast majority of Nigerians, Ndigbo were the silent majority supporters of General Muhammadu Buhari, GMB, but a twist of “what is wrong with Nigerian” electoral result cannot prove it. Making a case for the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, to be ceded to the South-east, Obioha said, “This body, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Caretaker Committee, is a baby conceived by Chris Ngige and delivered by Chief Mbazulike Ameachi and handed over to Ndigbo to check excesses of the people who were just agents of a pre-determined agenda. “Your Excellency, you were aware that the South-east was targeted by the PDP rigging machine which produced an election result that denied the zone of even a single senator and only three non-ranking House of Representatives members. “Ndigbo request that you adopt the principle of necessity to give the zone the position of Secretary to the Government of the Federation which is your prerogative and in addition, a position of one Presiding Officer in the House of Representatives,” he stated. Senator Chris Ngige who was a member of the delegation disclosed that though the party was yet to make a categorical statement on the issue of SGF, he was optimistic that it would eventually consider the South- east. According to him, “Well, I was in the first delegation that came the last time, but we cannot say for now that our party has zoned the position of SGF to the South-east because we have a Senate committee that is still working on distribution of party offices, executive and that of legislature which is where we have the Senate President, Deputy Senate President, Speaker, Deputy Speaker of the House of the Representative as presiding officers.”

WHO made the declaration after Liberia reported no new Ebola cases for 42 days, twice the maximum incubation period for the deadly disease.
However, the West African region is still affected by the disease. Sierra Leone and Guinea — Liberia's neighbors — each reported nine cases of the disease last week.
WHO has also announced changes to its post-Ebola guidelines. The agency is urging formerly infected men and their sexual partners to either abstain from sex or practice safe sex for six months, enough time to have two semen tests that are negative for the Ebola virus.

17-year-old Melbourne boy has been charged with planning a terrorism attack using homemade bombs.

The teenager was charged with terrorism-related offences following a raid at a house in Greenvale in Melbourne’s north on Friday night.
It is alleged he was preparing a terrorist attack in Australia, an allegation that has left his family shocked and distraught.
While police say they can’t be sure where or when the attack would occur, Australian federal police deputy commissioner Michael Phelan says they are sure the threat was “imminent”.
He described the three improvised explosive devices found at the home as “rudimentary”, but said the raids were necessary to protect the public.
