Journalists in Akwa-Ibom vow not to give Police coverage if…

The cordial relationship between the Nigeria Police and the media in Akwa Ibom State, was strained, yesterday, with the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, Cordelia Nwawe, walking journalists who were invited to cover the parade of suspected hoodlums out of her office.
The journalists who were miffed by the PPRO’s action, reminded her of her position as the mirror of the Nigeria Police Force .  The visibly enraged PPRO, claimed that the journalists were trying to dictate to her on how to run her office and as such, ordered them to leave her office immediately or face unpleasant consequences.  It was gathered that since Nwawe took over the office of the state’s PPRO in March this year, the cordial relationship between the newsmen and her office has turned sour.

Based on the shabby treatment, the journalists who are mostly correspondents of national dailies have vowed not to honour police invitations in the state as long as Nwawe remains the image maker of the Police in Akwa Ibom State.  The ugly incident occurred barley five days after the new Commissioner of Police assumed duty in the state with a plea to journalists to cooperate and partner the Police to enable the force achieve the objectives of modern day policing.
