The Lagos State Coordinator, National Youth Service Corps
(NYSC), Mr Cyril Akhanemhe, on Thursday urged the Lagos State Government
to provide a more befitting permanent orientation camp in the state.
Akhanemhe said this at the swearing-in of 2,300 representing
the 2015 Batch ‘A’ corps members at the orientation camp in
Iyana-Ipaja, Lagos.
The coordinator said that the NYSC current orientation camp
at Iyana-Ipaja was no longer conducive and spacious to contain the ever
increasing members of the corps yearly.
He commended Gov. Babatunde Fashola for his unwavering
support to the scheme especially in the provision of quality welfare to
corps members.
“We pray that our dream of a more befitting permanent orientation camp in the state will manifest soonest,’’ he said.
According to Akhanemhe, the Batch ‘A’ corps members comprise 575 males and 1,725 females.
Akhanemhe addressing the corps members coming from different
ethnic, religious, cultural and academic backgrounds to interact and
share similarities from their diverse cultures and make new friends.
“For over 41 years, the NYSC has continued to groom
graduates of higher institutions of learning into versatile leaders to
ensure that they contribute immensely to national development.
“The visible growth in critical sectors of the economy such
as agriculture, education, health and rural development cannot be
mentioned without the irreplaceable contributions of corps members,’’ he
said.
Akhanemhe said, “The scheme has four cardinal programmes,
namely: orientation course, primary assignment, community development
service, the winding-up and passing out exercise.
“These programmes are drafted to develop your aptitude,
resourcefulness, productivity as well as widen your perception about
life.
“The orientation course which you are undergoing is aimed at
exposing you to the fundamentals of NYSC, to enhance your better
understanding of the scheme as well as to create platforms for national
unity.
“You shall, in the next three weeks, be subjected to
paramilitary drills, man-o-war training, physical fitness exercises,
un-armed combat and martial arts.
“You will also undergo lectures on security, national
consciousness, volunteerism, disease control, skill acquisition and
entrepreneurship development.
“These exercises will instill in you leadership qualities
which include commitment to work, humility, teamwork, discipline,
confidence and perseverance,’’ he said.
Akhanemhe implored the members to make their stay on the
camp worthwhile by participating in all the programmes diligently and
aspire to greatness.
Earlier, President Goodluck Jonathan, in his address, had
said that in the past 42 years, the scheme has remained a beacon of hope
in the country’s mission for a united nation.
Jonathan, whose address was read by Mrs Titilayo Dosunmu,
the Director of Finance and Administration, Lagos State Ministry of
Special Duties, said the concluding story of the 2015 elections cannot
be complete without the mention of corps members.
“You discharged you electoral duties with diligence, transparency and patriotism.
“I salute your predecessors for their contributions toward
national building and in particular for the vital role they have played
as ad-hoc staff of national elections,’’ he said.
The Chief Justice of Lagos State, Justice Olufunmilola
Atilola, represented by Justice Opeyemi Oke, administered the oath of
allegiance on the corps members.
