A man was arrested after poppy wreaths were torn down from the Cenotaph in Whitehall.
Police said they had been called just before 11pm yesterday to
reports someone had been urinating on the war memorial, as well as
pulling down wreaths.
They arrested a 25-year-old man on suspicion of an offence under the Public Order Act.
The Cenotaph, a grade I listed structure, is Britain’s principal
national war memorial. As well as poppy wreaths laid there for
Remembrance Day and other anniversaries, the Royal British Legion
maintains a number of wreaths there all year round.
The Royal British Legion has been approached for comment. Scotland
Yard was unable to say how many wreaths had been pulled down or whether
there had been any damage to them.
