Four people have been killed, including a
six-month-old baby and a police officer, after a drunken gunman opened
fire at a traveller camp in France, authorities say.
The three civilians who died were all members of the same family and also included the baby's mother and grandfather. The woman's three-year-old child was also seriously wounded when the attacker shot the victims in a caravan.
Police said the suspect was then shot and injured by police.
Gendarmes were alerted after gunfire was reported at a Roma camp in the northern town of Roye.
A police spokesman said the gunman opened fire on the officers when they arrived at the camp.
One of them died of his injuries while another was also hurt.
At a news conference, state prosecutor Bernard Farret said the gunman "went to a caravan, shot a woman, shot her two children and the children's grandfather".
Mr Farret added: "He then left the caravan and because it was so close to the gendarmerie, gendarmes arrived quickly on the scene.
"When the man saw the gendarmes he fired several times towards the gendarmes.
"One gendarme was wounded, another was killed, and the gendarmes retaliated which cut this tragedy short."
The suspect, who is reportedly a member of the same travelling community, was then arrested.
The circumstances and motive for the killings have not yet been established, police sources said.
