Properties worth millions of naira destroyed as 3-hours rain fell in Ilorin

PROPERTY worth millions of naira was destroyed by flood in some parts of Ilorin metropolis, Kwara State, on Thursday evening.
Some of the affected areas include Omoseebi, Adisco, Royal Shekinah, Pipeline, Gaa Akanbi, Offa Garage, Unity, Coca-Cola in the metropolis, as shops, houses, electric poles and cars were destroyed by the flood.
Residents of the affected areas who said that the flood could have recorded casualties and caused more grievous havocs if the incident had happened in the dead of the night when people would have slept off, were seen lamenting their losses.


It was gathered that the heavy rain, which fell for about three hours, started around 4:30p.m till about 7:30 p.m. on Thursday while some areas also experienced the downpour early Friday morning.
The rain also caused heavy traffic gridlock in such areas as Gaa Akanbi, Royal Shekinah Omoseebi, until the flood subsided.
It was also gathered that most culverts, drainage systems and gutters along major roads and streets in the areas were flooded, while the flood spread into nearby houses and shops to destroy property.
Unconfirmed reports had it that a vehicle carrying four people were swept off by the flood, while many vehicles parked along the streets were washed away in different directions.
Speaking with journalists, some of the residents appealed to the Federal Government to intervene in the perennial flood occurrence in the affected areas of Ilorin metropolis, saying that the past efforts of the state government at solving the problem had not yielded any solution.
